Pat Cummins has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.
The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming Ashes series.
Rumors had circulated that Cummins might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.
Previous updates from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest kicking off on 21 November in Perth.
He revealed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the prospects of being involved.
"It's clear that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations involved, not just his injury, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.
"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a significant role. Hopefully from the opening match. If not, we'll adjust."
Injury History
The captain missed the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India recently after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.
Previous incidents include of back injuries, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.
He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the Ashes.
Bailey noted that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but admitted it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the opener.
Contingency Plans
In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.
All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.
He labeled it as a "small issue and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."
"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the opening match as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.
"His involvement was limited to the initial matches in any case. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
