The star has donated the full amount of his £25k Mercury Prize winnings to the MVT, which functions to save the Britain's independent music venues.

The star was presented with the prize on 16 October as his latest record People Watching was declared the best record of the previous year.

Fender has opted to hand the money over to the Music Venues Trust, in appreciation of the vital role small stages had in his early career.

"As an artist would not have achieved this success if it hadn't been for all the performances I performed around the area, and elsewhere, when I was beginning," said the artist. "These spaces are iconic, but they are in difficulty."

Since the start of 2023, at least 150 of these venues have shut down – roughly one-sixth of the whole industry in the UK.

Recently, major artists including Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all backed the trust in its efforts to help venues survive, by applying a small levy to their admission fees, which benefits local stages.

Sam Fender also participated, collecting over £100k on his recent tour to support thirty-eight grassroots venues across the UK.

The donation helped spaces that were dealing with imminent closure due to difficulties stemming from water damage, blazes and bereavements, as well as permit problems, court cases and sound issues.

Other venues received monetary aid in modernizing facilities and technical equipment that helped performers and audiences.

"The notion that revenue from shows in large arenas backs the independent spots, where it kicks off for artists like me, is just common sense," Fender has stated.

In recent years, they contributed their funds to the local youth club that nurtured their act, alongside other grassroots music organisations.

And winners that year they donated their award to a multiple sclerosis charity after a acquaintance was identified with the condition.

"Receiving the award was sufficient," remarked vocalist the singer. "The money was the extra but we didn't require the extra, because we had the main prize. So our victory affected the lives of others."

In the past week, the MVT shared it had saved two small stages in that region, by bringing them into community ownership.

The Joiners in the city and the other in that location were purchased under the public acquisition initiative, which is funded by a national body and enthusiasts who purchase "shares" in the properties.
