The Fallout of Nigeria's Impressive $25 M Art Center and the Historic Artworks

Nigeria's remarkable new Art Museum of West Africa (Mowaa) has found itself in the crosshairs of regional political struggles during the time it was supposed to – but did not manage – to open its doors to the visitors for the very first time.

The Grand Vision

The large-scale campus stands in the center of Benin City, administrative center of the southern state of Edo – and features an historical dig and buildings designed by celebrated British-Ghanaian architect Sir David Adjaye, particularly noted for the Smithsonian African American Museum that was inaugurated in the US capital in 2016.

It has been five years in the making – and is designed to celebrate both the heritage and the current era of artistic expression in the locale famous for the historic artworks, cultural objects taken from the city's royal palace by British troops in the nineteenth century.

Readiness and Potential

It is notable – and prior to the anticipated opening, Mowaa was buzzing with employees resolved to demonstrate it is a institution that can compete with established museums and galleries in the Western world.

Internally art restorers carefully revealed artworks from secure wrapping, checking each piece and taking detailed notes before positioning them on display surfaces and bases.

Experts adjusted environmental controls. In the scientific facility, staff members set up devices intended to maintain centuries-old objects.

Financial Backing and Economic Vision

The project has been the brainchild of entrepreneur Phillip Ihenacho – currently Mowaa's executive director.

"I want us to have a substantial economic impact on local residents in this region," he stated to the press, adding that he aspired to make Benin City "a tourism center."

Mowaa, a charitable local organization, sees itself creating over 30,000 employment opportunities and contributing more than $80m annually to the local cultural industry through alliances and events.

Investment and Administrative Problems

It has needed $25m to achieve this stage – funds gathered from multiple contributors, featuring the French and German governments, the British Museum and the local administration.

But at present the state authorities has pulled the rug from below it – revoking the occupancy of the site on which the facility was constructed.

An official representative stated this was because in the initial documents it had referred to itself as EMOWAA – and it had later removed "the state identifier" from its name.

Demonstrations and Government Action

This statement followed rallies on Sunday, when activists stormed the campus insisting it be named the Museum of the Benin Kingdom.

A boisterous group confronted overseas dignitaries at the facility before the launch – requiring them to be hurried away under security protection.

National leader Bola Tinubu has even stepped in to attempt to settle the dispute, setting up a special task force to address the controversy.

Administrative Challenges

But why has this become so divisive – and such a PR disaster?

A great deal of it results from internecine rivalries at a local state level, as it was the ex-administrator Godwin Obaseki – whose governance concluded last year – who was a major backer of the museum.

And it appears the administration of the new governor, a strong supporter of the area king, referred to as the Oba, may want increased control in the initiative. The protesters on Sunday, for instance, were calling for that the institution be placed under the control of the current Oba.

The Cultural Artifacts Debate

This brings into focus the disputed topic of the historical artworks, one of the continent's most celebrated historical legacy.

Because even if the museum does finally begin operations, these artifacts will be conspicuously absent.

They are brass, ivory and timber artworks that once adorned the king's residence of the ancient kingdom before British soldiers took them in the colonial era during a punitive expedition.

Currently, numerous remain distributed across museums in the West -- including the UK institution, German museum and the New York institution.

Restitution Efforts

Their homecoming has become one of the most disputed discussions in the global art world. About 150 have currently come back – and more are scheduled to be repatriated.

When plans for the institution in Benin City were originally proposed in recent years, the movers and shakers on the country's cultural sector anticipated it would become their natural home – a modern campus to exhibit them to the global audience.

But the waters were muddied two years ago after the central administration announced that the royal leader would be the legal custodian of returned objects – and the palace campaigned for a institution under the monarch's supervision, contrary to the desires of the ex-leader.

Diplomatic Challenges

This left Mowaa in a challenging circumstance: asserting a clear stance on restitution while remaining diplomatic on guardianship – and highlighting its wider mission, which led to|c
