The UK and US have finalized a major trade agreement that will preserve zero duties on UK drug products entering the US market.
As part of the deal, the UK has pledged to raise expenditure on pharmaceuticals through the public health system. This move guarantees that tariffs on these vital exports will stay at zero for a duration of the next three years.
This development comes after recent warnings to hike import taxes on branded pharmaceutical products, with increases mentioned as high as one hundred percent.
"This arrangement between the Britain strengthens the global environment for innovative medicines and brings much-needed fairness to American-British drug exports," an announcement said.
Pharmaceuticals represent one of the Britain's largest export categories to the US, which is clearly the biggest buyer for leading companies like GSK and AstraZeneca.
Trade data show that in the 12 months prior to the third quarter, the UK shipped drugs valued at over eleven billion pounds to the US. This value made up nearly one-fifth of total UK exports in that timeframe.
"This guarantee secures jobs, boosts capital expenditure and sets the stage for the UK to emerge as a global hub for life sciences," a minister remarked.
The deal involves several specific commitments from the British government:
The deal follows a ongoing row between the pharmaceutical industry and the ministers over spending levels and approval rates.
These tensions were heightened by arguments that US consumers were paying a premium for the equivalent treatments than patients in the other developed nations.
Over the last 18 months, several large pharmaceutical investments in the UK have been halted or abandoned, while substantial investments have been directed toward American operations.
The Science Minister publicly accepted that the NHS had to increase expenditure on drugs, noting that its budget allocation on drugs had decreased as a proportion of its total funding over the past decade.
