Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when dozens of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that these practices become not financially viable and present no risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
